Fierce Battles Ongoing for Control of Aleppo

Intense confrontations beleaguered many parts of northern Aleppo on February 22 as rebel groups warded off escalating regime offensives to reclaim Syria’s second largest city and its surroundings.

Fighting in the strategic area of Pashkoy and Al Mallah has been particularly rife, with news sources and activists reporting that rebels succeeded in pushing back pro-regime advances on February 22, killing over 100 regime fighters. Islamist rebel groups reportedly recaptured the northern town of Handaratein and the strategic Al Mallah farmlands from government fighters, while others including Pashkoy (also known as Bashukay) remain contested. Footage uploaded by Aleppo-based rebel groups show fighting in various parts of northern Aleppo.
