Flowers Laid at Malta Morgue for Victims of Migrant Ship Capsizing

Flowers were laid at the Mater Dei Hospital’s morgue in Tal-Qroqq, Malta, on April 22, where 24 victims of the latest migrant tragedy in the Mediterranean were brought by Maltese and Italian rescue services. As many as 900 people are feared dead after a large vessel trafficking migrants capsized off the island of Lampedusa on April 19. According to Italy’s Coast Guard, 28 migrants were rescued and at least 24 confirmed dead.

Members of the Armed Forces of Malta, who helped recover the corpses, laid flowers at the mortuary one day ahead of the funerals. Lieutenant Mark Mercieca of the Armed Forces of Malta voiced his sadness at a press conference on Tuesday that they were not able to save more lives.

“We were really disappointed, you could feel this through the entire crew, we were really hoping to have arrived in time,” Mercieca said. “However, sadly, only corpses were to be found.” Credit: YouTube/Armed Forces of Malta
