French Skier Survives Dramatic Plunge Into Crevasse

A Frenchman captured the moment he fell into a crevasse while skiing in the Swiss Alps on video. Benjamin Spilthooren, an experienced skier, was descending the Strahlhorn mountain in the Pennine Alps when he fell into the glacial crevasse on Sunday, May 24.

This video shows Benjamin’s fall and his rescue thanks to another group of skiers who were descending the mountain and heard the Frenchman’s cries for help.

After emerging from the crevasse, remarkably, Benjamin skied more then half a mile down the mountain to be later picked up by a rescue helicopter.

Benjamin had been skiing with his father, Roland, and two others, but he was at the back of the pack when the ice collapsed beneath him, he told SkiPass. Credit: YouTube/Roland Spilthooren
