Golden Dawn leader appears in court as government clamps down on far right.

As the leader of Greece’s far right Golden Dawn party and four of its members of parliament appear in court responding to charges of forming a criminal organisation, the Green government has announced a raft of measures to crackdown on the party.

The government plans to ban racist hate speech and cut off public funding to Golden Dawn.

Giorgos Katsiaris, an economist at the Greek Ministry of Development said, “There must be absolute freedom in parliament for whoever wants to vote, but when it comes to funding that goes toward criminal activities, I’m clearly in favour of such legislation.”

The crackdown against Golden Dawn comes a fortnight after a rapper, Pavlos Fissas was allegedly murdered by a Golden Dawn supporter.
