High Court order new Hillsborough inquest

A new inquest into the deaths of the 96 Liverpool fans during the Hillsborough disaster has been ordered by England’s High Court after the original accidental death verdicts for the victims were quashed. The new inquest was granted three months after the Hillsborough Independent Panel’s damning report that revealed new medical evidence that 41 of those who died might have been saved. Families of the supporters were overjoyed with the decision. Margaret Aspinall, Chairperson of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, said: “Something has been achieved here today that’s not been achieved before, it took us 23 years to get this achievement, we’ve not won nothing yet, we’ve still got a way to go, hopefully we’ll get there, but we didn’t achieve it alone. I’d like to thank on behalf of the 96 all them people for supporting us, trusting in us, giving us all that trust, knowing we were telling the truth all along.” The September report also revealed a widespread cover-up by police who attempted to blame the tragedy on the Liverpool fans. The landmark ruling on Wednesday came shortly after the Home Secretary announced a new police investigation into the disaster.
