IS Hostage John Cantlie Speaks From Kobane

Al-’Itisam, an official Islamic State media wing, released a video on October 27 showing British hostage John Cantlie in a broadcast from Kobane. The Islamic State has released five propaganda videos of Cantlie since his kidnap in Syria in November 2012.

In the video titled “Inside Ayn Al Islam,” the name given by IS to Kobane — also known as Ayn Al-Arab — John Cantlie suggests that claims made by Western media suggesting an IS retreat in Kobane are unfounded, and that instead, IS militants have nearly complete control of the city.

A Panoramio photo, which captures the silver “Turkish wheat silos” pictured at 20 seconds into the footage are geolocated at the Syria-Turkey border on Google Maps. The same silos are visible to the left, behind Cantlie, as he speaks from a rooftop in the northern part of Kobane at 3:49 minutes.

We cannot confirm the exact date that the footage was filmed. Credit: Al-’Itisam

After the shocking revelation in the penultimate episode that Jo was actually on trial for the murder of Alastair, not baby Noah, the finale shows how her husband's death came about. In a flashback, it is revealed that although Alastair convinces Jo she gave their baby the wrong medicine, it was actually he who fed Noah the wrong, ultimately fatal dosage, and lied to Jo to avoid the repercussions.

Theresa May will tell MPs "95%" of the UK's divorce deal with the EU has been agreed. The prime minister will deliver a bullish message to the House of Commons later on Monday, when she will state "the shape of the deal across the vast majority of the withdrawal agreement is now clear". Last week, the EU ruled "not enough progress" has been achieved in Brexit talks and so shelved plans for a special summit next month to sign off on a UK divorce deal.

Ireland blasphemy referendum: Country to vote on removing the offence from country’s constitution

On 26 October, voters in Ireland will go to the polls to decide on whether blasphemy should be removed as an offence from the country’s constitution. The law on blasphemy is generally seen as outdated, and while this is not as contentious a social issue as others like same sex marriage and abortion, a referendum is still required to alter the constitution. The referendum will take place on the same day as the country’s presidential election, in which the incumbent Michael D Higgins is expected to be re-elected.

Uber to appeal Singapore's competition watchdog decision on Grab deal

Uber Technologies Inc has decided to appeal a decision by the Singapore competition regulator that its merger with regional rival Grab violated the city-state's competition laws, the firm said on Monday. "Our objective is not to challenge the remedies of the decision, which are in fact almost identical to the commitments that Uber and Grab voluntarily offered to the CCCS (Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore)," Uber said in a statement. "Rather, we aim to clarify that the conclusion that our transaction with Grab led to a substantial lessening of competition, and that Uber intentionally breached the law, is unsupported and incorrect," it added.

South Korea says fighter jet deal with Indonesia is on track, despite $200 mln unpaid

South Korea said on Monday a project to develop a fighter jet with Indonesia was on track, and it will negotiate a way for Indonesia to pay its contribution, of which about $200 million is unpaid. Indonesia and South Korea agreed in 2014 to develop the "KF-X" fighter jet. The project is estimated to be worth about $7.9 billion, and Indonesia had agreed to pay 20 percent of the development costs, but a senior Indonesia official said on Friday it was seeking "lighter" financial terms.
