Houstonians March for Sandra Bland

A crowd marched through Hermann Park alongside Houston Zoo, Texas, on July 23, to stage a vigil for Sandra Bland, a 28-year-old black activist who died in police custody after being arrested three days earlier. Bland’s death sparked accusations of police negligence and violence.

Late on July 23, The Houston Chronicle reported that a preliminary autopsy showed Bland died of suicide, but said Waller County prosecutors would be investigating her arrest and her death. Assistant District Attorney Warren Diepraam told a press conference he had “not seen any evidence that indicates this was a homicide.” Credit: Instagram/hannahabonner
