Hundreds of Burundian Women Hold Peaceful Demonstration in Bujumbura

Hundreds of women demonstrated in downtown Bujumbura on Sunday, May 10, despite an order from the Burundian government on Saturday for an immediate end to protests against president Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term. The National Security Council called on protesters and organizers, of what they say is an “insurrection,” to cease demonstrations and remove all barricades within 48 hours.

The ban did not stop at least 200 women from rallying in the streets of the capital, singing for peace.

They chanted, “We are mothers. It is our children who are killed. It is our children who are in prison. We are here to respect human rights. We are here against the third term,” RFI reported. Credit: YouTube/Bertrand Ninteretse
