Hundreds Demand Removal of Confederate Battle Flag

Hundreds rallied in front of the South Carolina State House on Saturday, June 20, demanding the removal of the Confederate battle flag in the wake of a racially motivated shooting in Charleston. Nine members of the the historically black Emanuel AME Church were killed Wednesday night by a man who reportedly told them they were “taking over our country” and “have to go.” In this footage, protesters chant “Take it down.”

The Confederate battle flag flew over the state house until 2000 when a legislative compromise moved it to a Confederate memorial on the capitol grounds. The same state law orders that the flag be flown 30 feet above the ground at all times and be lit at night. Credit: Instagram/sandramoscato
