Investigators Continue Search for Second Germanwings Black Box

Investigators working at the Germanwings crash site continued their search for the aircraft’s second cockpit voice recorder (CVR), or black box, on March 31. One significantly damaged CVR was recovered from the crash site in the Alps on March 24, and led investigators to believe that the co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz, had manipulated the plane into a descent, causing the crash.

During a statement on March 25, French President Francois Hollande said the casing for the second CVR had been found, but was missing the main element.

The Dusseldorf-bound flight, carrying 144 passengers and six crew members, took off from Barcelona airport at 8:55 GMT on March 24 and reportedly crashed 45 minutes later, following an eight-minute descent. Credit: Dailymotion/French Interior Ministry
