Istanbul University Students Chant in Protest Against Police Raid

Large numbers of riot police and plainclothes police stormed buildings and made arrests on the Beyazit campus of Istanbul University on April 1, according to reports. Both The National Turk and Sol reported that 36 people were taken into custody, while a political youth movement with a presence on the campus said dozens of students were injured.

The raids took place as an office of Turkey’s ruling AK Party was stormed in Istanbul, with the assailants later arrested by authorities. Both incidents follow a fatal hostage-taking incident in the Turkish capital by a radical leftist group on Tuesday, March 31. The funeral of the hostage, a prosecutor named Mehmet Selim Kiraz who worked on the Berkin Elvan case, took place on April 1.
