Joaquin Strengthens Into Hurricane

Hurricane Joaquin formed overnight in the Atlantic Ocean, about 245 miles northeast of the central Bahamas, where a hurricane warning was put in place. A hurricane watch also was issued for the northwestern Bahamas. The storm is expected to turn north very near the islands and strengthen as it makes its way up the US east coast.

Forecasters are watching Joaquin closely to determine any potential for a landfall on the US northeast coast.
