Kentucky Clerk Denies Same-Sex Marriage Licenses Despite Court Ruling

A Kentucky county clerk again refused marriage licenses to same-sex couples on September 1 even though the US Supreme Court ruled she must issue the documents. Michael and Tim Long, seen in this video, were among at least two couples denied a marriage license on September 1 in Rowan County.

A federal court has ordered Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis to appear on September 3 to explain why she should not be held in contempt of court. Her deputies are to appear too.

Davis had come to the counter earlier in the day when a gay couple asked for a license and were refused. She was confronted by protesters and the press. More protesters had gathered outside the building.

The US Supreme Court on August 31 rejected Davis’ request to be exempt from issuing licenses to same-sex couples based on her religious liberties. The court did not issue comment with its ruling. The court in June legalized same-sex marriage. Credit: YouTube/Michael Long
