Kerry to Travel to Havana to Re-Open American Embassy

After more than 50 years, the United States will re-open its embassy in Cuba this summer. US President Barack Obama announced the embassy will open on July 20 during comments at the White House on July 1. Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Havana to open the embassy, which closed in 1961. Cuba also will re-open its embassy in Washington.

The embassy re-opening is part of work by Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro to normalize diplomatic relations. Obama first announced the opening of relations last December, which include an increase in travel to the island country. American businesses also will be able to invest in Cuba.
