Labour Pledges £2.5 Billion for NHS in First Year

Speaking in Manchester on April 21, Ed Miliband pledged funding of £2.5 billion for the NHS in the first year of a Labour-led government. The announcement came a day after he delivered an emotionally charged message at the Scottish Trades Union Congress, saying that the Conservatives were being dishonest about their plans for the health service.

In Manchester, Miliband said, “the NHS is facing one of its gravest threats” under a Tory government, and that “David Cameron is now a mortal danger to the NHS”. He promised to bring in funds to support the NHS immediately, and said Labour would undertake a drive to hire 20,000 extra nurses, 1,000 of those trained in the first year of government.
