Leon: Army Offensives Undermining Dialogue

Bernardino Leon, the UN secretary general’s representative for Libya, said on March 21 that military operations there are undermining the potential for dialogue. Leon was speaking from Skhirat, Morocco, where diplomatic talks are under way between various factions involved in the conflict in Libya.

The UN-backed meeting is designed to aid rival armed factions in Libya form a unity government. A military offensive launched by the internationally-recognized government of Libya against armed groups in Tripoli coincided with a critical moment of the peace talks and undermined them, according to Leon.
