LGBT Parliamentarian Responds to #Gayby Controversy With Emotional Speech

Australian Labor Party MP and lesbian parent Penny Sharpe slammed “ill-informed commentary” about the Gayby Baby documentary in a speech to the New South Wales parliament on August 26. The commentary “targeted the courageous young people and the families featured in the film and pointed the public finger at them to say that they are not normal,” Sharpe said. “It is time for this to stop. I am normal. My kids are normal.”

On August 27, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews called it “cruel rubbish” to suggest that young gay people were not normal. In a statement on Facebook, Andrews reacted to the decision of the NSW government to ban the showing of Gayby Baby during class time by saying: “I’m really getting sick of this stuff.”

“Apparently the NSW Government thinks it’s all too confusing and distressing a subject for high school students,” Andrews added. “They couldn’t be more wrong.” Credit: Parliament of New South Wales
