LGBT Rights Group Honors Civil Rights Leader Julian Bond

Julian Bond, the US civil rights leader who died on August 15, was remembered as “a warrior for good who helped conquer hate in the name of love” by LGBT rights group Human Rights Campaign in a video released on August 16. Bond was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1965, helped to found the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and was National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) chairman from 1998 to 2008.

Bond was a committed supporter of equal rights for LGBT Americans.

“Many gays and lesbians worked side by side with me in the ‘60s civil rights movement,” Bond is recorded as saying in an undated speech in the video. “Am I now to tell them, ‘Thanks for risking life and limb helping me win my rights,’ but they can’t share now in the equality they hope to win? Not a chance.” Credit: YouTube/Human Rights Campaign
