Merkel Welcomes Greek PM for Debt-Summit in Berlin

Greek Prime minister Alexis Tsipras arrived for further talks with German chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Monday, March 23, amid fears that Athens could run out of cash. The leaders met last week when Merkel pledged that no further financial assistance would be given without reforms. According to German reports, Tsipras arrived in Berlin with a first draft of further reforms to address his country’s debt crisis.

Greece and Germany have been at loggerheads over the renegotiation of the Greek bail-out, that Tsipras’ Syriza party promised to Greek voters in order to end austerity. The EU recently pledged a 2 billion euro fund to address the country’s ‘humanitarian crisis’.

During a joint press conference, Tsipras said, “we must work to destroy stereotypes; Greeks are not lazy; Germans are not to be blamed for the crisis”. He also referenced the Greek demand for World War II reparations, calling it a ‘moral’ issue, but denied any plans to seize German property in Greece. Credit: Facebook/Bundesregierung
