More Than One Million Syrian Refugees in Lebanon Face Severe Challenges

More than one million Syrian refugees living in Lebanon face difficulty meeting their basic needs and present economic challenges for the country, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

“The equivalent of what we have in Lebanon in the United States would be more than 80 million refugees coming into the United States. You can understand that this has a terrible impact on the economy and society of Lebanon,” High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Gutteres said on Tuesday, April 14, after he experienced first hand the challenges the refugees face in a visit to Debane, an informal settlement between a highway and a banana farm near the southern city of Ghaziye.
