Maryland state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby announced on May 1 the six officers involved in Freddie Gray’s arrest would be charged, prompting celebrations in Baltimore’s west side. The charges include second-degree murder, manslaughter, assault and misconduct, according to The Baltimore Sun. Depending on the charges, the officers face up to 20 years to 60 years in prison.

Gray was arrested on April 12 and suffered critical injuries while in custody. He died a week later, triggering a police investigation and protests across the city. The protests turned to civil unrest on April 27, culminating in street violence and fights with police. Maryland’s governor activated the state’s National Guard and the city has been under a nightly curfew since. Police made hundreds of arrests, and dozens of police officers have been injured.
