Oakland May Day March Focuses on Police Violence

Hundreds of May Day protesters filled the streets in Oakland, California, on May 1 to voice their concerns about police violence against black men. This video shows the protest from one of the demonstrators.

International Longshore Warehouse Union Local 10 organized the rally and march, which started at the port, according to CBS San Francisco. The march effectively shut down the port until the evening because of the union’s involvement in the protest. Police escorted the protesters, and there were no indications of any problems.

The march came the same day six police officers were charged in Baltimore, Maryland in the death of Freddie Gray. Gray was critically injured during his April 12 arrest and died a week later. His death sparked protests and a police investigation. The protests turned to unrest on April 27, and the Maryland National Guard was activated and a nightly curfew was put into place to stem the tide of violence. Hundreds of people have been arrested, and dozens of police officers were injured. Credit: Instagram/amitz_nasi
