Obama Addresses Gun Control in Emotional Remarks on Charleston Shooting

In a public statement on Thursday afternoon, June 18, President Barack Obama expressed his deep sorrow at the tragic shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, on Wednesday. Nine people were killed at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church when a gunman opened fire during a prayer service.

Addressing America’s racial history and the debate on gun control, Obama said: “I’ve had to make statements like this too many times. Communities like this have had to endure tragedies like this too many times. We don’t have all the facts but we do know that once again innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble in getting their hands on a gun.” Credit: YouTube/White House
