Obama Apologizes for Deaths of US and Italian Hostages in US Operation

US President Barack Obama issued a statement on April 23 apologizing for the deaths of an Italian and US hostage in a US “counter-terrorism” operation on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in January. The hostages were named as Warren Weinstein and Giovanni Lo Porto.

“We do believe the operation did take out dangerous members of al Qaeda,” Obama said. “What we did not know is that, tragically, is that al Qaeda was hiding the presence of Warren and Giovanni in the compound.” Credit: The White House
