Obama Grants Clemency to 46 Whose Sentences Didn't Reflect Their Crimes

President Barack Obama granted clemency to 46 men and women whose prison sentences “didn’t fit” their crimes. Speaking from the White House, Obama said: “If they had been sentenced under today’s laws, nearly all of them would have served their time.” Some of those incarcerated were mentioned as having spent decades behind bars for non-violent minor offences.

On the White House blog, Counsel to the President Neil Eggleston wrote: “The President has now issued nearly 90 commutations, the vast majority of them to non-violent offenders sentenced for drug crimes under outdated sentencing rules.” Credit: Facebook/The White House
