Obama Leads Crowd in 'Amazing Grace' During Pinckney Funeral in Charleston

US President Barack Obama led thousands of mourners in a refrain of “Amazing Grace” during his eulogy for Clementa Pinckney in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 26. Pinckney, a state senator, was one of the nine people killed at the Emanuel AME Church, where he was a pastor, on June 17.

This video shows the crowd singing with Obama from someone sitting behind the president.

Thousands of people attended Pinckney’s funeral, pushing the arena at the College of Charleston to capacity. Those who were not able to enter the arena were directed to area locations to watch the funeral.

Pinckney and eight others were shot and killed by a gunman who first attended a Bible study with the group. Dylann Roof was arrested on June 18 in North Carolina after an overnight manhunt. He is being held without bail on nine murder charges and a $1 million bond on gun charges. Credit: Instagram/Nick D’Allesandro
