How One American-Made Chinese Chicken Dish Generates $1B in Sales Each Year

In the U.S. alone there are more Chinese restaurants than there are McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken combined, says Jennifer Lee, Producer of ‘The Search for General Tso.’ Lee says there is one iconic dish that’s on every menu, General Tso’s Chicken, which is an American creation that’s ‘a little exotic, but friendly enough for American tastes.’ Lee’s film traces the origins of the dish to its global popularity. ‘I also love how there have been so many product extensions. General Tso’s dumplings, General Tso’s potato chips, General Tso’s veal, General Tso’s tofu, Genral Tso’s po boys, so in a way general Tso is sort of this amazing branding machine as well.’ TheStreet’s Ruben Ramirez reports from Park City, Utah.
