Paul Ryan Calls for Comprehensive Strategy on Defeating Islamic State

House Speaker Paul Ryan called on President Barack Obama on November 17 to create a comprehensive strategy to defeat Islamic State. Ryan’s comments came as he expressed sympathy for the victims of the terrorist attacks in Paris, where at least 132 people were killed. “It’s clear that this was an act of war, and that the world needs American leadership,” Ryan said.

Additionally, he said, he’s asked Republican House leaders to create a plan on how to address the Syrian refugee crisis. “Our nation has always been welcoming, but we cannot let terrorists take advantage of our compassion,” he said. “This is a moment when it’s better to be safe than to be sorry. So we think the prudent, the responsible thing is to take a pause on this particular aspect of this refugee program in order to verify that terrorists are not trying to infiltrate the refugee population."
