People Lines Caacupé Streets to See Pope Francis

People lined the streets of Caacupé, around 36 miles (57 km) east of Asuncion, to catch a glimpse of the pope as he travelled to the Marian Shrine of Caacupé to deliver mass on Saturday, July 11. The shrine to the Virgin of Caacupé, a small wooden statue housed in the city’s cathedral, is a site of international pilgrimage.

Pope Francis neared the end of his eight-day tour of South America on Saturday. The mayor of Caacupé gave the pope the keys to the city on his arrival. Francis was scheduled to celebrate Mass on Sunday in Asuncion before returning to Rome. Credit: Instagram/Romi Lopez
