Petrobrás Corruption Scandal Triggers Protests in Brazil

Demonstrators took to the streets of Porto Alegre on Thursday, March 12, spurred by the corruption scandal at state-run oil company Petrobrás. Public anger is mounting over the alleged involvement of politicians in the corruption scheme, which is threatening the stability of Brazil’s governing coalition.

Workers from the Petrobrás-owned REFAP refinery in Canoas, 25km outside the city, staged the action. The demonstrators said they were defending “Petrobrás and democracy”.
