Pipeline Leak Spoils Santa Barbara Coastline

Workers continued to assess and clean up an area of the California coast near Santa Barbara on May 21 after an oil spill. A pipe owned by Plains All American Pipeline that runs along the coast burst on May 19, spewing as much as 105,000 gallons of oil, according to local media. The US Coast Guard has launched a cleanup effort and will assess the scope of the spill.

The spill affected a four-mile stretch from Refugio State Beach toward El Capitan State Beach, which is north of Santa Barbara. Those beaches were closed by state officials.
