Police Clear Out Aboriginal Camp on Perth Island Amid Protest

Dozens of police on foot and on horseback began to clear out an Aboriginal protest camp on Perth’s Heirisson Island on Friday, March 13, set up to house displaced indigenous people and protest the closure of remote indigenous communities. Perth City Council gave occupants until midday on Friday to evacuate the area.

According to an ABC report the camp was set up as a refuge for those displaced by the Western Australia government’s planned closure of up to 150 of the state’s 274 remote indigenous communities.
