Police Fire Rubber Bullets to Break Up Xenophobic Demonstration

South African police used rubber bullets to disperse crowds who were throwing bottles and rocks at journalists in the Actonville area of Benoni on April 16, according to reports. It was reported that the group had been threatening truck drivers and non-nationals in the area, in what was the most recent in a spate of xenophobic violence in the region.

Police in nearby Johannesburg were on alert on April 15 as mobs threatened to close foreign-owned shops, according to reports, while in the port city of Durban a week of clashes between South African’s and foreign nationals in the city’s Central Business District left five people dead.
