Pope calls for a stop to the war in Syria

Pope Benedict has used his yearly ‘state of the world’ address to call for a stop to the war in Syria. The 85-year-old Roman Catholic leader told a gathering of 180 diplomats that they must tell their governments to do everything possible to stop the slaughter. His remarks come one day after a defiant speech from Syria’s president.
