Pro-Europe Demonstrators Flow Through Athens Metro Station

Thousands of people gathered in Athens’ Syntagma Square for a pro-Europe rally just hours before Greece defaulted on its loans to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The demonstration was organised by the supporters of a yes campaign for the July 5 referendum on a new bailout deal and economic reforms package brokered with Greece’s creditors.

Reports on Wednesday, citing a letter from Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, said that Greece would be willing to accept most of the conditions imposed by creditors in an proposed agreement set out on June 26.

Greece missed its deadline to repay a €1.6 billion loan to the IMF on June 30, in the first such default for a developed country, according to Reuters.

The no campaign had staged a rally outside Greek Parliament in Syntagma Square on Monday evening. This video, uploaded by socialist opposition party Pasok Ellinikou-Argyroupolis, shows a crowd of protesters moving through Syntagma Metro Station. Credit: Facebook/Pasok Ellinikou-Argyroupolis
