Protesters Demand Release of Jailed Former Maldivian President

Scores of protesters gathered in the streets of the Maldivian capital of Malé on November 27 to demand the release of former president, Mohamed Nasheed, and several other political detainees. According to reports quoting the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), more than 25,000 people were expected to join the demonstration.

Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment under anti-terrorism laws in March 2015 after being found guilty of ordering the arrest of a judge in 2012. The case and conviction of Nasheed has warranted international criticism. Credit: Facebook/Raajje.mv
