Protesters March Against President in Ecuador's Largest City

Thousands of people took to the streets across Ecuador on July 2 in anti-government protests days before a scheduled visit by Pope Francis. Protests focused on President Rafael Correa, with indigenous groups critical of policies on mining in the Amazon, rights groups concerned about pressure on media and environmentalists, and broader swathes of the population unhappy with economic policies.

Some of the protests ended in violent confrontations with police, while Correa warned of a coup threat. This video shows marchers in Guayaquil. Credit: YouTube/James Steubing
