Red Cross Appeals for Funding to Rebuild Lives in Eastern Ukraine

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is appealing for an additional €26 million ($27.8 million) to help people whose lives have been destroyed by fighting in eastern Ukraine. According to the organization, many people are still displaced, either inside Ukraine or in neighboring countries. The Red Cross says the additional funding would bring its total budget for Ukraine to almost €70 million.

The organization reports that displaced people who return to their localities often find homes destroyed and are trying to survive with no regular sources of food or other supplies. It says that mines and unexploded ordnance are an ever-present danger and that “homes for the elderly are running out of food, as residents are no longer receiving incomes.”
