Refugees Stranded as Hungarian Authorities Close Border

Hundreds of refugees and migrants were left stranded on the Hungarian border on Tuesday, September 15, one day after authorities closed a 40-meter gap in a razorwire security fence, blocking a rail line used to cross the Serbia-Hungary border near Roszke. A razor-coiled train car, which can be removed in order to allow trains to pass, was rolled into the gap on Monday night, according to reports.

Police continued to allow small groups of asylum seekers to enter the country through a narrow road checkpoint on Monday, but by Tuesday morning authorities had shuttered that official crossing at Roszke and another at Asothalom, leaving hundreds stuck on the Serbian side of the border. According to reports, around 20 Hungarian riot police stood watch behind the six-foot fence at Roszke as a crowd of some 300 refugees waited for the border to reopen. Credit: Twitter/Thomas Präkelt
