Renewed Clashes in Ahmedabad After Night of Rioting

Fresh clashes broke out in India’s western Gujarat state on August 26 after a huge rally by the Patel community descended into rioting in Ahmedabad the previous night. Hundreds of thousands of members of the economically strong community descended on the Sardar Patel stadium to rally over access to jobs and education, saying that quotas for lower castes have put them at a disadvantage.

Clashes with members of lower castes broke out on Tuesday night after the brief detention of controversial Patel leader Hardik Patel by Ahmedabad police.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for calm as a curfew was imposed across the state.
