Rep. John Lewis Recalls 'Bloody Sunday': I Thought I Saw Death

Thousands gathered in Selma, Alabama, on Saturday, March 7, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,” when police clubbed and tear gassed peaceful civil rights protesters in 1965. US Representative John Lewis spoke at Brown Chapel in Selma, recounting his own experiences on the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

US President Barack Obama led a march across the bridge on Saturday. During his remarks, Obama said, “50 years from Bloody Sunday, our march is not yet finished, but we’re getting closer.” Credit: Facebook/Kevin McCarthy
