Riot Police Evict Refugees From Camp Sites in Calais

French riot police cleared several makeshift camps around the port city of Calais on Monday, September 21, evicting some 400 refugees, according to reports. Police arrived at one camp in central Calais in the early hours of Monday morning, firing tear gas as they forced refugees out and dismantled the site.

After the raid a convoy of Gendarmes marched refugees to ‘The Jungle’ camp, home to some 3,000 people, most of whom are hoping to get to England, Calais Migrant Solidarity reported. Police also bulldozed tents in parts of the “Jungle” camp on Monday, destroying possessions, including refugees’ passports, Leigh Daynes, Doctors of the World executive director, said on Twitter. Volunteers working with the Help Calais charity say that similar actions were taken by police at the makeshift camp sites. Credit: Twitter/@TomBaileyBlog
