Run-off vote to be held after elections for new Turkish Cypriot leader

A second-round runoff is to be held among Turkish Cypriot voters after elections on Sunday to choose a new leader. With 95 percent of ballot papers counted, the conservative incumbent Dervis Eroglu is in the lead with just under 29 percent of the vote. In a week’s time he will go up against the leftist candidate Mustafa Akinci, who scored just under 27 percent. Turkish Cypriot voters in the north are choosing the person who will represent them in peace talks expected to resume soon with Greek Cypriots in the south.
