Russia Conducts Second Wave of Syria Airstrikes Overnight

The Russian Defense Ministry released footage on Thursday, October 1, which it described as showing airstrikes conducted overnight in Syria on Islamic State targets. The military said it struck four Islamic State targets in eight sorties, including an ammunition depot near Idlib and a “three-level” headquarters near Hama. Storyful has not been able to independently confirm that those locations are pictured in the footage.

“To prevent engagement of civil population, the targets for the Russian aviation are assigned only outside inhabited areas and only on the basis of confirmed reconnaissance data received from multiple sources,” a military statement read.

A pro-Assad regime television station reported that the strikes had hit an insurgent group known as Army of Conquest, an alliance that doesn’t include Islamic State. Credit: Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation
