Self-taught running robot completes 5k

This self-taught robot ran a 5K

‘Cassie’ the two-legged robot made history

as the first bipedal robot to run 3.1 miles outdoors

Cassie 'taught' itself to run using a deep reinforcement algorithm

It uses machine learning to control a running gait on outdoor terrain

The run was completed in just over 53 minutes and on a single charge

although it did fall twice

The robot was invented at Oregon State University

and produced by the university's spinout company Agility Robotics

Bipedal robots like Cassie might be used in the future

to delivery packages or help people in their homes
