Separatists Hold Memorial at MH17 Crash Site to Mark Anniversary

On the first anniversary marking the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 tragedy, pro-Russian separatists held a memorial at the crash site near Hrabove, in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. The Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) rebel group has been in control of the area since the plane was downed on July 17, 2014, killing 298 people.

One year on, a Dutch-led investigative team is still working to piece together what happened on that day. Despite evidence that the separatists shot down the aircraft using a BUK missile, rebel leader Alexander Zakharchenko attacked what he called criminal authorities in Kiev, who he said should be punished.

Results from the international investigation are set to be released in October. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
