Small Plane Crashes on Isle of Wight, Pilot Seriously Injured

A light aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff near Sandown Airport on Britain’s Isle of Wight, leaving the pilot with serious injuries, according to reports. Eyewitnesses said the plane’s engine made unusual sounds after it lifted off. The male pilot was airlifted to a hospital in nearby Southampton; his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, according to the BBC. This video shows the aftermath, and the medical helicopter.

This local report described the pilot as being a French national in his 60s. The airport was said to be hosting an end-of-World-War-II commemorative event, likely making it the second airshow-related crash in the UK on Saturday, Credit: YouTube/Shane Thornton
