South Africa deadly mall collapse cause not immediately identified, many trapped

The collapse of a half-built shopping mall in Tongaat, South Africa, near Durban, has killed at least one person and trapped dozens, mostly construction workers.

Emergency services reported that more than 20 people had been taken to hospital with “massive injuries”. It was not yet clear what caused the collapse.

An official said the second floor of the structure had given way, and concrete blocks had fallen on people. Hydraulic rescue equipment was brought in to break through to the people trapped inside.
