South Carolina Residents Navigate Flooded Streets in Canoes

Heavy rains generated by a nor’easter combined with rain churning from Hurricane Joaquin triggered flooding across South Carolina on Saturday, October 3. The rain started on Friday and was expected to last the weekend.

On Johns Island, people took to boats to navigate flooded streets in one neighborhood. Meanwhile, roads were closed throughout Charleston because of flooding, and the high tide was expected to be two feet higher than usual, according to local media. Thousands of people also were without power. Authorities were warning people to stay indoors and not to travel until the storm and flooding had passed. Credit: Instagram/Alex Pappas
