Tear Gas Fired at Demonstrators in Ankara

Demonstrations took place across Turkey on March 12, to mark the funeral of Berkin Elvan, a teenage boy who was shot with a tear gas canister during the 2013 Gezi Park protests. Elvan died on March 11 after a nine-month stay in an intensive care unit at İstanbul’s Okmeydanı Hospital. Elvan was reportedly on the way to buy bread when he was struck by a tear gas canister fired by riot police on June 16, 2013.
